Dhanteras 2027: Date, Puja Vidhi & Significance

The name joins 'dhan' (wealth) and 'teras' (the thirteenth lunar day). Ayurveda practitioners mark the day as National Ayurveda Day because Dhanvantari, the founder of Ayurveda, emerged from the churning of the ocean with a pot of nectar.

A well-known tale tells of King Hima's son, who was destined to die on the fourth night of his marriage. His wife kept him awake with stories and piled her jewellery at the door; Yama, arriving as a serpent, was dazzled by the glitter and left. Lamps lit for Yama this evening recall that story.

1. Sweep the house and the entrance – Lakshmi enters only a clean home
2. Place a new broom, steel or brass vessel or a silver coin at the puja spot
3. After sunset, offer turmeric, rice and sweets to Dhanvantari and Kuber
4. Keep a wheat-flour lamp burning outside the door, facing south, for Yamraj
