About Koneswaram Temple
Thirukoneswaram is one of the Pancha Ishwarams – the five ancient Shiva temples of Sri Lanka – and a Paadal Petra Sthalam praised in the Tevaram hymns of Sambandar and Sundarar. It stands on a cliff above the Indian Ocean.
The original temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1622; the present temple was rebuilt in the 1950s, and some ancient idols recovered from the sea are worshipped here again.
🚆 How to Reach Koneswaram Temple
The temple stands on Swami Rock inside Fort Frederick in Trincomalee town. Trincomalee is about 5–6 hours by road or train from Colombo; walk or take a tuk-tuk from the town centre.
👕 Dress Code & Rules
Modest traditional clothing; men may be asked to remove their shirts in the inner shrine. Remove shoes at the entrance.
